Artist. Barcelona, 1952–2025
Carlos Echevarría (Barcelona, 1952–2025) was a Barcelona artist who, over five decades, built a body of work held together by the persistence of a free eye. Painting, sculpture, collage and object art coexist in a singular universe: elegant, perfectionist, guided by curiosity, irony and a deep independence of thought.
For Echevarría, art was above all freedom: starting over with every work, questioning his own certainties and exploring paths with no limit other than artistic honesty. This conviction, present in his work and in his writings, shaped a career that began with international exhibitions in Cologne and New York in the 1980s and continued, by his own choice, outside the conventional art circuit.
Working in series is another key to his practice. Each series marked out a field of enquiry that he explored until he found new means of expression. The method encouraged experimentation: the series set the frame and the outcome stayed open to the unexpected. Hence the diversity of his output, recognisable by a way of thinking.
Art history plays a central role in his work. In numerous interventions on images by the Old Masters, Echevarría brings past and present into dialogue, strips the works of their solemnity and keeps their references alive. As he put it: “In art you cannot renounce the past; in renouncing it, its reference is implicit.”
In Barcelona, his work caught the attention of critics. In 1992, Josep Maria Cadena praised in El Periódico the wit of his interventions on famous works.
His universe begins with the everyday. Bottles, keys, pencils, coins, maps and seemingly insignificant objects take on another dimension through unexpected associations, shifts in scale or minimal interventions that transform their meaning. Humour, often irreverent, is his way of questioning the established order and putting our perception to the test.
The artist had to preserve his freedom of judgement against the demands of the market, fashions and classifications. His studio became a space of continuous enquiry, where every work was a new chance to experiment, revise and begin again.
In his essay Por amor al arte (For the Love of Art), Echevarría described creation as inseparable from life itself, with its uncertainties, its demands and its capacity for renewal. He distrusted discourses that try to justify a work, and the weight that signature, price or recognition carry over our perception. For him, a work had to stand on its own and keep its power to invite a free interpretation.
“Works of art are begun by the artist
and finished by the viewer.”
This conviction runs through an extensive, diverse and largely unseen body of work, the fruit of fifty years of dedication. A body of work that finds its identity in constant curiosity, independent thinking and a singular ability to discover new possibilities in the everyday.
Carlos Echevarría’s work is presented at Private Gallery Barcelona through private, invitation-only viewings.
